Main Goal

Reporting through the Operations team, this position is responsible for the production of high-quality greenhouse and field cage grown plants to the standards and expectations established by the Breeding and Cell Biology teams. Emphasis on all aspects related to greenhouse/field cage plant growth and seed production for dihaploid (DH) application programs. Autonomy in routine activities, as well as oversight of routine work by Operations support staff, is requisite.

Job description

Crop Management
•Ensure optimum plant health management (nutrition, pest management, environmental conditions control, plant pruning/maintenance, seed production etc.), with an emphasis on DH plant production programs
•Ensure that crop management procedures are followed according to general good greenhouse practices, company rules and station standards in terms of agronomics, pest control and safety
•Measure and monitor key performance metrics related to both the quality and productivity of crop programs

Planning and Strategy

•Conduct periodic crop reviews (Crop Talks) with members of the cell biology and breeding teams to assess success of programs
•Coordinate the yearly planning and optimum infrastructure use in coordination with breeding and cell biology teams and forecast weekly labor needs and work with others to achieve desired outcomes in an efficient and productive manner
•Assist in the development of annual operating budgets and capital investment plans
•Conduct periodic crop walks with the Station Manager and Greenhouse Manager to review crop progress and develop plans to address any variances or opportunities
•Prepare monthly written progress reports for the Station Manager, breeding and cell biology managers

Station and Organizational Development and Improvement

•Actively support the station Illness and Injury Prevention Plan
•Promote a culture of continuous improvement and growth for the company
•Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings to share progress and discuss opportunities for improvement
•Work with the Station Manager and cell biology teams to implement improvement initiatives regarding DH production
•Participate in periodic seminars and educational opportunities to ensure that protocols are observed and up-to-date
•Ensure the vision, goals, and culture of the company is demonstrated to the workers at both stations, and influence an adoption of the culture
•Perform other duties as assigned by the Station Manager
Provides general oversight of tasks performed by 3-6 contract laborers and/or seasonals as needed.

Profile

To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following technical skills:
• Must have technical knowledge and experience growing vegetables in greenhouses and field cages
• Must have a working knowledge of common greenhouse pests and diseases as well as the pesticides and/or other control measures used to manage them
• Must be able to accurately and safely apply agrichemicals to label specifications. Must possess a pesticide applicator's license or have the ability to obtain one.
• Should have experience with MS Word, Excel, and Outlook as well as common software used to manage and control greenhouse environmental systems (ARGUS).
• This position requires a non-smoker based on job responsibilities related to greenhouses due to the potential for Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) contamination.
• Ability to reach trellised crops or plant material at variable heights or distances (will require extending reach and using tools such as step stools)
